The Faculty of Education
HKU has been involved in teacher education since 1917, and the Faculty of Education was established in 1984. The Faculty of Education is forward-looking and world leading, ranking fifth globally in Education (THE 2021). It has assumed an important role in educational research and professional training and has contributed significantly to education policy and development in Hong Kong. It is a major teacher-education institution and has strong expertise in policy analysis and curriculum development. The Positions
Applications are invited for appointments as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Learning Design and Implementation Sciences (2 positions) in the Faculty of Education (Ref.: 503188), to commence on August 1, 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms subject to approval.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in education-related disciplines represented by the Faculty, along with expertise in the scholarship and practice of interdisciplinary curriculum design, implementation and assessment. Successful candidates should be specialists in learning design and design thinking with emphasis on pedagogical innovations. Such innovations can inform what is worth knowing and therefore teaching because they are responsive to 1) different kinds of learners and diverse ways of knowing 2) multiple contexts (subject, environments or place, cultural, linguistic, policy) 3) learning pathways or progressions and 4) international trends and challenges whether technological, practical, empirical, or conceptual. They should also be specialists in implementation sciences, an emerging field that attends to both the design of learning and the fidelity of implementation to design. This new area, building on the work in the field of curriculum study, implementation and evaluation, has been fueled by rising interest in evidence-based practice, new and inclusive models of accountability and assessment, and measuring impact.
The appointees will be expected to teach courses offered in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervise research postgraduate students, contribute actively to research and knowledge exchange, and assume service/administrative responsibilities as appropriate. Those appointed at the senior level will also be expected to lead collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives in research and knowledge exchange, mentor and nurture the next generation of scholars and researchers, and assume high-level service/administrative responsibilities.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
