Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Smart Specialization and Resilience in the Department of Geography (Ref.: 502779), to commence on August 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at the Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.
The Department of Geography, established in 1931, is the first university-level geography department in Hong Kong. The 2019 QS World University Ranking rated the Department the 12th among the world’s top 200 universities in the subject of geography and area studies. The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate, taught postgraduate, MPhil and PhD programmes in human and physical geography with an interdisciplinary orientation. Its team of 17 full-time teaching staff, more than 30 post-doctoral fellows and research students, is actively engaged in cutting-edge research. The Department’s scholarly activities are well supported by a map library and four modern specialized laboratories. More information of the Department can be obtained at .
Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Geography or cognate disciplines with strength/expertise on smart specialization, urban resilience, computational social science, environmental data science or a closely related data-driven field. They should have extensive research and teaching experience at the tertiary level, with a strong track record in reputable research grants and publications. Appointee at the level of Professor should be internationally recognized leader in their field and be willing to provide academic leadership relevant to the Department’s operation and strategic development.
With this appointment, we intend to further build spatial analytic capacity and provide application to innovation across different sectors (e.g., economic, transport, health, sustainability). The appointee is expected to teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise research students, conduct high quality scholarly research in the related fields, and assist in administration.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
