The Director, Business Development will work closely with the Head of Business Development China and the Heads of Business to identify, evaluate and operationalize new growth opportunities for China.
What you can contribute
In particular, the individual will take ownership of the following strategic initiatives:
Lead BD opportunities (M&A, JVs, in-Licensing) and other Strategic Alliance activities in the Region to support the Group development strategy and strengthen its position in China, through all steps including identification, analysis, cross-functional evaluation, Leading deal negotiation, closure and post-closure integration support. Provide Strategic Direction and Support development of sustainable and growing business across divisions (pharma, CHC, vaccines) including (a) acquisition of brands/companies, and (b) implementation of development activities across divisions including through in-licensing, (c) complex alliances and partnerships, including Joint-ventures, innovative partnering models, etc. Be a leading stakeholder in the execution of Sanofi’s Gate Strategy, including by being involved and developing skills across the different businesses and priorities requiring Business development support such as:
Grow our Established Business platforms
Accelerate the development of our Specialty Care portfolio and Businesses
Transform our business through a broad range of digital initiatives
Explore new areas Business and partnering models
Enhance cross-functional project management through optimal management of multiple HQ, Regional and Country interfaces, whether divisions or functions Take an active role in the development of strong BD team through process improvements, capability development and cross-fertilization of best practices leading to Excellence in execution of Business development opportunities at pace.
While the position holder may progressively focus on one partnering area, the intent is not to define it specifically as development of capabilities will also come from multiple exposure to different forms of partnerships, businesses and stakeholders. The successful candidate in the position will have the opportunity to very quickly grow in responsibilities, when it comes to independence, ability to interact with internal and external senior stakholders, including CEOs and their respective boards and senior management, as well as up to the Executive Committee of Sanofi internally.

  • If not coming from the healthcare industry, ability to learn fast and be able to draw some learnings and comparisons between industries and/or key strategic challenges and add value for Sanofi.
  • Understand and know how to navigate the China and Global biopharmaceutical market, including companies, products, and company strategies that enable be able to effectively work with key partners
  • Maintain key external relationships while identifying new potential partners within the areas assigned
  • Track and communicate ongoing industry developments to the internal team members and stay up-to-date on the competitive environment
    Technical competency
    The selected candidate would be expected to display some or all of the below, and at least have the appetite to develop them in the near future.
  • Medical/pharmacology / industry knowledge / New Technologies (Digital, AI, etc.)
  • Understanding of Financial modelling and valuation
  • Deal structuring and negotiation
  • Excellent project management and analytical skills, with experience in an environment requiring significant data analysis and cross-functional interaction.
    Educational Qualification / Experience

  • Essential: Degree qualifications in a health related discipline or in business/marketing
  • Preferred: PhD, MBA from leading institution
  • Minimum of 10+ years’ experience with a leading Pharmaceutical/Biotech/HealthCare company (or in a field relevant to healthcare key strategic issues) / Management consulting and/or investment banking and / or VC, PE in senior Marketing/BD/Finance and/or Senior Project Manager roles in leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of success and value creation in previous roles
  • Strong exposure to China environment and how business is done in China, including various healthcare businesses such as Vaccines, Pharma, CHC, etc., and good understanding of key success drivers for these businesses Existing external China network is a plus
  • Internal candidates must bring a well-developed internal network and strong understanding of internal dynamics and decision-making to the table with experience working closely with other functions such as R&D, IA, Marketing, Medical, Sales, Finance and Legal is highly desirable
