Job Description

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is looking for an innovative and ambitious senior executive with excellent communicative and administrative competence to serve as the Associate Vice-President of Research Advancement and Enterprise (AVP-RAE) and the Director of the Research Office.
The environment
Founded in 1956, HKBU strives to become a world-class research-led liberal arts University in Asia for the world delivering academic and research excellence in a caring, creative and global culture. The University's ambitious 10-year Institutional Strategic Plan 2018-28 (ISP) sets the research direction to transform HKBU into a reputed international powerhouse for research excellence.
In line with the ISP, we have created three University-level interdisciplinary research clusters and six high-level interdisciplinary research labs that address pressing global issues. Our researchers are world-class, and according to Clarivate Analytics, 12 high-performing disciplines at HKBU, which are benchmarked in the Essential Science Indicator (ESI), are ranked in the top 1% worldwide.
The University currently has an academic and teaching staff strength of about 1,000 and a student population of over 11,000. We offer a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Arts, Business, Chinese Medicine, Communication, Science, Social Sciences, Visual Arts, and Continuing Education.
Beyond Hong Kong, the University has the United International College in Zhuhai, which is a joint campus with Beijing Normal University, as well as research centres in other parts of mainland China, including the Institute of Research and Continuing Education in Shenzhen.
The position
Reporting to the Vice-President (Research and Development) (VPRD), the AVP-RAE will also work closely with three other AVPs in the senior research management team to provide university-wide leadership and strategic vision for the innovative expansion of the University's research enterprise activities.
The ideal AVP-RAE will be a hands-on person who leads the newly restructured research grants management, planning and knowledge transfer (KT) teams in facilitating and enabling the faculties to advance their discoveries and innovative solutions to create societal impact.
S/he will be responsible for strategic research planning; nurturing corporate partnerships and government relations; developing research and KT policies; and the diversification and expansion of research funding. The AVP will also oversee the Knowledge Transfer Office and the newly restructured Research Office. Major responsibilities include:
The candidate should be an outward-facing and forward-looking executive with a minimum of 15 years experience in KT, including strategy formulation, research management, outreach and fundraising, or equivalent experience at a senior level.
S/he should have an entrepreneurial mind-set, a dynamic personality, and a demonstrated ability to engage with a broad range of internal and external constituencies to establish successful research partnerships and attract external resources.
Extensive knowledge of and experience in local, Mainland and global research funding landscapes, intellectual property issues and KT/entrepreneurship management are expected. A proven capability to promote and catalyse a research environment that rewards new ideas and innovation, builds collaborations, encourages teamwork and promotes diversity is preferred. The candidate should also demonstrate proficiencies in leadership, facilitation skill, tact, diplomacy and communication, as well as the judgement necessary in dealing with complex issues and acumen in communicating with senior personnel.
Appointment terms
The appointment will normally be made on a three-year term, and it is renewable subject to review and mutual agreement. The remuneration package includes basic salary, retirement/gratuity benefits currently at 15% of basic salary, annual leave, a medical and dental scheme, and as appropriate, housing assistance and a relocation allowance.
