Reporting to the Managing Director, Asia Emerging Markets General Account Investments, this role is a member of the Asia General Account Investments team, responsible for the management and oversight of USD87b in AUM, covering a broad range of asset classes including public and private debt, public and private equities, as well as other alternative investments.
The Associate Director, Asia EM GA Investments plays a critical role on Emerging Markets team within Asia GA investments that isresponsible fortheoversightand developmentofgeneral account investments in Manulife’s dynamic emerging markets including Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Indonesia. With a keen attentiontofast evolving businessneedsand market dynamics, the incumbent drives new onshore investment opportunities and initiatives, implementsoffshore investment strategies, and provides stewardship forthe on-balance sheet investments in those markets.
The successful incumbent is a strong collaborator who works seamlessly with business unit management, investment managers,ALM, Risk, and functional teamssuch as Tax, Capital and Legalat the local, regional and corporate levels. He/sheleverages his/her stronginvestment and capital market experience, knowledge of life insurance operations,andstrong communication and multi-tasking skillsto help drivethe success ofManulife’semerging market businesses.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Undergraduate degree in finance, business studies or actuarial science required; MBA, CFA designation preferred

  • 5+ years progressive experience in investment management and advisory

  • Strong analytical and project management skills

  • Excellent PC skills; especially with Microsoft Excel (knowledge of advanced formulas, pivots, macro/ VBA knowledge is a plus), Power Point and Word, Team, Outlook, SharePoint and OneNote

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work productively with multiple parties at varying levels in the global organization, local language skill in one of the emerging markets will be an advantage

  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and uncertainty

  • A discipline self-starter that can work steadfastly, flexibly and efficiently, multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment in remote and team setting

  • Skill and experiences in research & data collection

On the job you will:

  • Be a key member in Emerging Markets General Account Investments team to implement strategy that enhances performance and manages risk. Work closely with functional teams eg finance, ALM and operations.

  • Keep abreast of emerging markets investment trend, create database for market data, prepare IC materials and contribute to the discussion on formulating market view in the tactifcal asset allocation process.

  • Share expertise on emerging capital markets and apply existing knowledge to assess the opportunities in new markets.

  • Be resourceful in researching new investment topics and explore new markets, well versed in sourcing data online, from Bloomberg and broker research to support investment thesis and articulate investment needs and challenges in different markets.

  • Monitor portfolio performance, raise any performance issue and identify catalysts that might impact both fixed income an equity portfolios in the insurance context.

  • Participate in ad hoc projects, setting timeline and coordinate with functional teams to ensure timely delivery.

  • Having relationship with local market participants in emerging markets will be an advantage.
